An internet outage at Kettering Health that forced seven locations to divert stroke patients and caused problems with the health care system’s online patient portal Tuesday morning was resolved after about seven hours, according to a statement from Kettering Health.

Problems began about 7:45 a.m. and were resolved about 2:30 p.m.

The outage was not related to a cyber attack or an external party, according to a statement from Kettering Health.

During the outage, several system applications were unavailable including MyChart, the health care system’s online patient portal.

Emergency departments at Hamilton, Greene Memorial, Huber, Middletown, Preble, Springfield and Franklin were unable to accept stroke patients during the outage. Patients were diverted to other hospitals.

The only other people affected were patients trying to access MyChart, according to Kettering Health.

According to the statement, the problems were related to an internal network issue which was identified and fixed.

Scheduled appointments were resumed and the diversion protocol was lifted, according to Kettering Health. Patients affected by the outage have been instructed to call their doctor or practice.

Between April and May, Kettering Health was the target of a cyberattack linked to a ransomware group known as Interlock that caused a system-wide technology outage.

More than 730,000 files containing personal information such as identification cards, payment data and financial documents were stolen, according to the cybersecurity firm Comparitech.

The attack resulted in canceled appointments, delayed medical treatments and an inability for patients to call their care teams or access MyChart.

It took more than three weeks for Kettering Health to restore normal operations.

Kettering Health continues to operate a dedicated assistance line, (212)-202-8326, for people who may have been impacted by the cyberattack.

Health care had more cyberthreats in 2024 than any other critical infrastructure industry, according to the FBI’s annual Internet Crime Report, with 206 data breaches and 238 ransomware threats.

Kettering Health has 14 area medical centers and more than 120 outpatient locations throughout Western Ohio, as well as the Kettering Physician Network, which includes more than 700 board-certified providers.
