Bitter cold, additional rounds of snow coming this weekend

Unseasonable cold, wind to bring sub-zero wind chills to the region

Freezing temperatures with bitterly cold wind chills are expected through Wednesday, as well as a few additional rounds of snow this weekend.

Drier conditions return today, but winds will continue. Gusts of up to 30 mph are possible, but should slowly decrease, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Today will be unseasonably cold. Highs will be in the mid-20s, about 10 degrees colder than usual for this time of year, according to the NWS. The combination of gusty winds and frigid temperatures has wind chills in the in the teens today.

Overnight lows will drop below 20 degrees.

Temperatures will climb to the mid-30s Friday. Snow chances also return, with most communities seeing less than an inch.

Some areas could see rain mix in with snow on Friday, but most will have accumulating snow by Saturday. An additional round of snow is possible Saturday night into Sunday.

While possible snow totals are unclear at this time, significant snowfall isn’t expected, according to the NWS.

Bitterly cold temperatures will continue into the mid-week. Daytime highs will struggle to get out of the teens, with single-digit lows overnight.

When factoring wind and wind, wind chills will be in the negatives or around 0 degrees from Saturday night through Wednesday, according to the NWS.
